One step forward, one step back

FARMERS’ leaders have described the agreement on the CAP Health Check as both a step forward and a step back.

Environment secretary Hilary Benn also described the deal in Brussels as a missed opportunity to speed up the process of change.

On the plus side, it will end half of the remaining coupled payments, bringing the amount of farm payments switched to environmental schemes across the EU closer to the level already applying in the UK, and simplifying the rules for farm payments, including greater flexibility on the rules governing cross compliance.

Bluetongue Update…

The NFU has called for the Government and the cattle and sheep industry in Great Britain to stand together and suspend imports of cattle and sheep from areas where Bluetongue is known to be circulating in light of news that BTv1 has been detected in a batch of cattle imported from France.
The animals originated from within the BTV1 and 8 Restricted Zone in the south west of France and were detected as a result of post-import testing carried out by Defra on all Bluetongue susceptible animals arriving from continental Europe. Their documentation complied with the EU Bluetongue rules governing the movement of livestock as the movement occurred at least 60 days after they had been vaccinated.

Cold weather tyres offer safer alternative

WITH winter fast approaching, TyreSafe is advising motorists to consider fitting cold weather tyres in order to improve road safety and reduce the number of accidents on the road. Despite the change in road conditions at the onset of winter, many drivers continue to drive on standard tyres. Slippery roads accounted for 55 percent of accidents in which road environment was a contributory factor in 2007, according to Department for Transport (DfT) figures.
